Organize Catalog: Folders, Semantic Classification, and Tags

Separate team organization from AI-visible meaning, then use filters and bulk actions to manage a large Catalog safely.

What is the difference between a Folder, Semantic Classification, and a Tag?

A Folder organizes the Catalog for people inside the dashboard. Semantic Classification places an item inside a hierarchy of meaning the AI can use. Semantic Tags add flexible meaning that can apply across items in different parts of that hierarchy. For a new Catalog, we recommend letting AI analyze the item set and propose these structures first, then reviewing them before item creation.

  • Folder is for team organization.
  • Semantic Classification is for hierarchical AI-visible meaning.
  • Semantic Tags are flexible meaning labels shared across different items.

Semantic Classification or Semantic Tree

You can build a semantic path up to three levels deep. For example: Education > Courses > Professional Skills. Not every item needs all three levels; use only enough depth to make the meaning clearer.

When should I use Semantic Tags?

  • When a useful meaning applies to items across different classifications, such as “beginner friendly” or “online” when that meaning helps discovery.
  • When you want to add flexible meaning without moving the item to another place in the Semantic Tree.
  • Do not use a Tag instead of an exact business fact that should be an AI Search Attribute.

A simple comparison

  • Folder: September Offers — so the team can find campaign items quickly.
  • Semantic Classification: Education > Courses > Sales — so AI understands the item type and context.
  • Semantic Tag: Beginner Friendly — a flexible meaning that may appear across different course groups.
  • AI Search Attribute: Instructor = Hassan Faleeh — an exact fact customers can ask about directly.

Managing many items

  1. 1

Use Search plus status, Folder, and Semantic Classification filters to identify the target set.

  2. 2

Review the matching count before selecting everything.

  3. 3

Use cross-page bulk selection when the interface supports it and the filtered results are the intended set.

  4. 4

Apply the change only to that set, then monitor reindexing when the change affects AI-visible meaning.

If reindexing starts

  • Large changes may continue in the background.
  • Monitor the operation in Catalog instead of assuming a page refresh cancelled it.
  • If failed items appear and a supported Retry action is available, retry the affected items rather than repeating the entire operation.
