Before connecting WhatsApp API, ask the more important question

Most teams start with the technical question: how do we connect the API? The more important question is whether the planned messaging workflow is compatible with WhatsApp Business Platform rules.

A successful integration does not automatically mean a valid workflow. The API and automation can work while the business starts conversations without clear opt-in, messages outside the service window incorrectly, or provides no clear route to a human.

The short answer

Before launching WhatsApp Business API or Cloud API, review five areas: Consent, Window, Template, Escalation, Data. Call it the CWTED test.

If one area is unclear, fix the workflow before increasing message volume.

Why this matters now in Egypt

In Google Trends for Egypt over the last 12 months, whatsapp business cloud api appeared as a Rising query at +750% around WhatsApp Business, while whatsapp business api pricing rose +200% and whatsapp api rose +120%.

Around WhatsApp API itself, meta whatsapp cloud api rose +850%, whatsapp business cloud api +550%, and whatsapp cloud api +140%.

These are relative Google Trends signals, not absolute search volumes. They indicate growing interest in the API and Cloud API, not only the app.

The CWTED test

Current WhatsApp Business policy says contacting someone on WhatsApp requires that they provided their mobile number and that the business received opt-in permission confirming they want subsequent WhatsApp messages from that business.

A phone number in a CRM alone does not automatically equal permission.

Quick test: if a customer asks where and when they opted in, can your team answer clearly?

W: Window

WhatsApp policy distinguishes between replies inside the customer service window and messages outside it. The current official policy says a business may reply without a Message Template within 24 hours of the user's last message.

Outside the 24-hour window, business-initiated communication requires an approved Message Template under the current policy.

Automation therefore needs time and context awareness, not only a rule saying "the customer did not reply."

T: Template

Before building a follow-up sequence, classify each step. Is it a reply inside the service window? Or is the business initiating a message outside it? If outside, which Template and purpose apply?

This prevents a sequence from looking valid in a CRM while conflicting with the channel's own rules.

E: Escalation

This is essential with AI and automation. WhatsApp policy allows automation during the 24-hour window while requiring prompt, clear and direct escalation paths.

Official examples include human agent transfer in chat, phone, email and web support.

A design where AI answers everything with no exit is not a sound operating model.

Current published Mr. AI information says the team can take over when needed and receive the conversation with its summary and record. But even with technical handoff, you still need to define when it should happen.

D: Data

WhatsApp places responsibility on businesses to secure required permissions for collecting, using and sharing information, maintain a published privacy policy and comply with applicable law.

The policy also warns against asking for or sharing highly sensitive information such as full payment card numbers, financial account numbers and certain sensitive identifiers.

The question is not only whether AI can ask. It is whether the question should be asked on this channel at all.

Free worksheet: WhatsApp API Pre-launch Audit

Use this table for every workflow:

Check Question Status
Consent Do we have clear WhatsApp opt-in? Yes / No / Review
Window Does every message know whether it is inside or outside 24 hours? Yes / No / Review
Template Are messages that need Templates identified? Yes / No / Review
Escalation Can the customer reach a human or clear support route? Yes / No / Review
Data Is requested data appropriate for the channel and policy? Yes / No / Review

Any "No" is a blocker before scale. Any "Review" should have an owner and date.

Practical example

A lead asks for a service price. Inside the service window, the system replies using correct company information. If the lead asks something requiring human judgment, handoff happens. Then the lead goes quiet.

Before follow-up, the system or team needs to know whether it is still inside the 24-hour window, whether a Template is required, whether appropriate opt-in exists and whether the follow-up has a clear reason.

Good automation is not "send after 24 hours." It is a decision based on consent + timing + message type + context.

What can go wrong even when the API works?

The first mistake is treating every CRM lead as automatically messageable on WhatsApp. A phone number alone is not opt-in.

The second is building follow-up sequences without service-window awareness.

The third is using AI without an escalation path.

The fourth is keeping WhatsApp rules in one employee's head instead of documenting them in the playbook.

Where does Mr. AI fit?

Current published information says Mr. AI supports WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and website chat, uses company knowledge for replies, assists with follow-up and next-step tracking, and provides chat summaries, insight reports and communication analytics.

The FAQ also says the team remains responsible for decisions and cases requiring human judgment and can take over conversations when needed.

The better model is to define explicit rules: when should it reply, follow up, stop, hand off, and what data may it request?

Go-live checklist

Review eight questions: where do we collect opt-in? How do we prove consent? Who owns Templates? How does the system track the 24-hour window? Which cases go to a person? How can customers stop messages? What data is inappropriate for chat? Who reviews the workflow when WhatsApp policy changes?

If the answers exist only in one person's head, you are not ready to scale.

The practical decision

Take one workflow and run the CWTED test. Trace the first message, replies, follow-up, handoff and data collected. If all five areas are clear, move to the next workflow. If one is unclear, fix it before doubling volume.

Frequently asked questions

Does having a phone number mean I can message the customer on WhatsApp?

No. Current WhatsApp policy ties contact to having the phone number plus opt-in permission confirming that the person wants WhatsApp messages from the business.

Can I use automation inside the 24-hour window?

Current policy allows automation during the window while requiring a prompt, clear and direct escalation path.

Can I send a normal free-form message after 24 hours?

Under current WhatsApp Business policy, business-initiated messages outside the customer service window use approved Message Templates.

Does Mr. AI remove the human team?

No. Current published product information says the team remains responsible for decisions and cases that need human judgment.
